What is a short code?
A short code is a unique 4-6-digit short telephone number used for SMS marketing campaigns or SMS content services. A sort code is a country specific number and is not internationally routed. A short code can be purchased from mobile network operators.
How can I send an SMS with a short code
To send an SMS with a short code sender ID, you need an SMS gateway application, such as Ozeki SMS gateway. Ozeki SMS gateway submits the SMS an application originated (AO) SMS, which means it can freely define the sender phone number.
Are short codes expensive?
Short codes are provided by mobile network operators for a fixed fee. They are often expensive because only a limited number is available from short numbers. The price usually depends on the population of the country where it is used. The range starts from EUR 1000 and goes up to EUR 100 000.
Where are short codes used?
Short codes are often used for high-volume, application originated (A0) SMS systems. Unlike standard mobile phone numbers, short codes are pre-approved by carriers and are less likely to be blocked as spam. How much time does it take to get a short code?

Are short codes and alphanumeric sender IDs the same?
The short answer is no. Alphanumeric sender IDs contain both letters and number, while short codes contain numbers only. In the SMPP submit_sm PDU the addressing type is different. Short codes are sent as local phone number and alphanumeric sender ids are sent as alphanumeric string.
